The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is an experience like no other.  It has been sold out for 18 consecutive years and you get to experience all the color and majesty of this unforgettable evening of music, theatre, dance and ceremony!  This widely acclaimed event takes place on the esplanade of Edinburgh’s iconic Castle.  In 2017 The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo embraces the theme, Splash of Tartan, playing host to a stunning array of performers from all over the world.  The theme will be presented by the Royal Navy with the Massed Bands of Her Majesty’s Royal Marine celebrating the history, heritage and color of Scotland’s global family.

The first Edinburgh Tattoo took place in 1950 and there were only eight items on that first program. Today, it is without question one of the world’s greatest shows.

The word ‘tattoo’ derives from the cry of innkeepers in the Low Countries in the 17th and 18th centuries. At closing time, the fifes and drums of the local regiment would march through the streets, their music signaled a return to quarters, and the shout would go up – ‘Doe den tap toe’ (‘turn off the taps’).

From this beginning, a ‘tattoo’ became a ceremonial performance of military music by massed bands and the Royal Edinburgh Tattoo is the leading example of the modern development of the early Tattoo events held in Britain.

Currently, the range of music presented at the Tattoo is as diverse as the countries represented.  From pomp and circumstance to showbiz razzle-dazzle– with just about everything in between – you, the audience, can now expect to hear, New Orleans jazz, modern pop, and even folk music.

Over the years, it has presented a whole host of international performers – military and civilian – from 48 countries. Dancers, steel bands, flag-wavers, drill teams, Zulus, camels, elephants, cavalry, motorcyclists, and police dogs have joined bands of all sizes and descriptions and this is a mere example of what you can expect. The result is an unforgettable spectacle that is prominent worldwide. And, one that will amaze and delight you.

The Tattoo is set up and run for charitable purposes. Over the years, it has gifted some £8 million to service and civilian organizations.  At the last official independent count, visitors to the Tattoo contributed an estimated £77 million to the Scottish economy.
