Feel the thunder of pre-historic beats as they rumble by during this fall tradition in the beautiful Black Hills. Ever since park rangers started rounding up some 1,500 head of buffalo each fall for the annual branding, sorting and vaccinating, visitors have been fascinated by this Old West tradition. You’ll experience the excitement from your reserved and safe viewing area to the corrals.

The Palmer Gulch Lodge will be your home for five nights in the Black Hills. There you can bask in the warm glow of magnificent sunsets and sunrises, breathtaking blue skies, and the soft scent of Ponderosa pines. Enjoy clear, sun-drenched days and enchanting evenings under a blanket of stars.

This one-of-a kind experience also includes South Dakota's 17th Annual Buffalo Roundup Arts Festival where you’ll find the finest arts and crafts, along with pilgrim re-enactments and Western and Native American entertainment. A perfect way to get into the spirit of the imminent round-up of 1500 buffalo.

TRAVEL ITINERARY

Day 1: Indianapolis / Rapid City SD / Palmer Gulch Lodge
Passengers arrive at Rapid City Regional Airport and are transported to Palmer Gulch Lodge, situated in the shadow of Harney Peak for the next five nights. The new rock and log construction lends the lodge just the right rustic charm for our Black Hills adventure (D).

Day 2: Crazy Horse Memorial / Hill City / Mount Rushmore / Buffalo Roundup Arts Festival
This morning’s brief drive will bring us to Crazy Horse Memorial, the still unfinished mountain carving dedicated to Native Americans, and the rejuvenated arts community of Hill City with its funky shops, galleries, boutiques. We’ll “dine with the Presidents” at Mount Rushmore, the Shrine to Democracy, before attending the Buffalo Roundup Arts Festival. This one-of-a-kind event includes a buffalo wallow chili cook-off, buffalo chip throwing contest, cowboy poets, musical entertainment, arts & crafts booths and much more. After a wonderful day of exploring and sightseeing we'll return to the lodge for another restful night in the mountain air. (CB)

Day 3: Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup / Iron Mountain Scenic Drive / 1880 Steam Train Ride
We’ll be up bright and early this morning to take in the exciting annual buffalo roundup. Feel the thunder as 1,500 head of buffalo rumble by and park personnel, cowboys and cowgirls do their best to drive the Park’s herd into the Buffalo Corrals - passing two designated viewing areas along the way. After the herd is safely in the corrals the park staff will sort, brand, test and select certain animals for the fall sale, held later in November. This afternoon we’ll drink in the beauty of these forested mountains on the scenic byway, Iron Mountain Road with its pigtail bridges, mountain switchbacks, and amazing tunnels which perfectly frame the faces of Mount Rushmore. A train ride on the historic 1880 Steam Train rounds out this very special day. (CB)

Day 4: Historic Deadwood
Today we'll explore the rich and roistering gold camp of Deadwood, which provided the setting for the last great gold rush in America. Legalized gaming has returned to the storied gulch where the likes of Wild Bill Hickock, Calamity Jane and Poker Alice once walked. We'll have time to try our luck at the tables, as well as tour historic Boot Hill where the legends now rest. Before gold was discovered, this area was the sacred Paha Sapa of the Lakota People. Tatanka: Story of the Bison will allow you to discover a saga as compelling as any in American history. From its origins to its virtual extermination - and ultimate revival - the bison's story is captured in the visionary new attraction in the black Hills of South Dakota. Tonight we'll dine at the Deadwood Social Club above one of the town's most notorious saloons. (CB,D)

Day 5: Badlands National Park / Wall Drugstore / Custer State Park Game Lodge Dinner
Badlands National Park, adjacent to the beautiful Black Hills, is our destination today. We’ll spend the entire day exploring and picture-taking in this incredible area. Also on the agenda is world-famous Wall Drug. Tonight we’ll dine on buffalo steak at the lovely State Game Lodge in Custer State Park. (CB,D)

Day 6: Departures
Sadly we bid a fond farewell to our Wild West adventure as you are transported to the airport for return flights. (CB)
