Scenic Door County

August 17-21, 2009
5 days 4 nights

Explore the beauty and charm of Wisconsin's scenic Door County Peninsula, an area of islands, lighthouses and miles of shoreline. Amidst pristine scenery, discover an area laden with performing arts, renowned galleries and shops among its many quaint villages and towns. Enchantment waits by the shoreline setting at the Peninsula Players, America's oldest summer theatre, where for a couple of hours, you will forget all about the world around you and become immersed in the story unfolding before you.

Experience an authentic fish boil, hunt for treasures in one-of-a-kind shops, galleries and markets. Visit Door County's most identifiable landmark, the Cana Lighthouse, located just off shore and the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, a living nautical history museum. And what more could you want from our island getaway than a visit to the Washington Hotel, Restaurant & Culinary School, a century-old hotel reborn in 2001, transporting you back in time to when the pace was slower and meals and time together was savored. Milwaukee highlights wraps up this lakeside excursion.

TRAVEL ITINERARY

Day 1: Indianapolis – Manitowoc, WI
After departing Indianapolis we stop in historic Long Grove Village, once a hub for commerce, socializing and worship for German settlers, the area has retained its Victorian charm. Stroll cobblestone sidewalks to select a place for lunch on your own, shop unique boutiques and galleries. Continue into Wisconsin, check-in to the newly remodeled Best Western in Manitowoc before our welcome dinner at the Courthouse Pub. (CB, D)

Day 2: Manitowoc – Egg Harbor - Fish Creek - Ephraim
After breakfast at hotel, explore the largest maritime museum on the Great Lakes and New Smithsonian affiliate. Explore the museum at your own pace, or take a guided tour of the USS COBIA, the nation’s most completely restored WWII Submarine. Depart for Door County where you’ll find out why Door County was selected as Best Small-Town getaway by Midwest Living in 2007. We stop for lunch on your own in Egg Harbor. A leisurely stroll downtown delights the eye with shops, galleries and restaurants located in lovingly restored historic buildings and in newer buildings that capture the village's old Wisconsin charm. Egg Harbor's charm and beauty will linger in your mind and bring you back again and again. Tantalize your palate at Orchard Country Winery....a spacious new country market in the heart of Door County where you gets to taste the "fruits of labor" provided by the Lautenbach family since the 1950's. Check into Parkwood Lodge, located across from Peninsula State Park. This evening enjoy a delicious and entertaining fish boil at the Old Post Office, an old southern mansion with that was home to Ephraim’s post office in the early 1900’s. (B, D)

Day 3: Fish Creek – Washington Island – Sister Bay
Breakfast at nearby Julie's Café before we join our local guide for a ferry ride to Washington Island. This area is filled with history. You will be making the same passage as the Native Americans who paddled their canoes from island to island, French explorers who came to the area, and schooners that traveled the area a century ago. The island tour includes the Norwegian Stave Church and Historic Fishing Village. Meet Chef Caplin and enjoy a variety of doughnuts and boxed lunch at Washington Hotel Culinary School. The Washington Hotel, Restaurant & Culinary School transports you back in time to a place where the pace is slower and meals and time together are meant to be savored. After leaving the island, we’ll stop at Seaquist Orchards for orchard tour and shopping in the market. Return to the lodge to freshen up before departing for dinner at Al Johnson's, (famous for the goats grazing on the roof), in Sister Bay followed by an evening performance at American Folklore Theatre in Peninsula State Park. On the way to the theatre, enjoy the view of the lake and Eagle Bluff Lighthouse in the park. (B, L, D and Performance)

Day 4: Fish Creek – Algoma - Milwaukee
Savor breakfast this morning with a waterfront view at Harbor Fish Market & Grille in Bailey's Harbor. Explore the Lake Michigan side of Door County with a tour of Cana Island Lighthouse. Walk across the rock causeway from the Door County mainland to the lighthouse. Step inside the keeper's house where, beginning in 1869, the first of a number of lighthouse keepers tended to the light which guided sailors and protected them from the dangerous shoals extending out from the island into Lake Michigan. Another savory stop, lunch and cooking demonstration in Algoma at Farm Market Kitchen, is a regional shared-use food processing business incubator. Visit The Flying Pig Gallery & Greenspace along Lake Michigan’s shore; it is the owners' mission to bring an amusing, inspiring and educational peek at art and gardens. We then travel to Milwaukee and check-into the newly renovated Ambassador Inn. Dinner on own this evening at the adjacent Envoy Restaurant. (B, L)

Day 5: Milwaukee - Indianapolis
Take in a city view of Lake Michigan as we tour Milwaukee with our local guide arriving at the Milwaukee Art Museum for the morning opening of Milwaukee Art Museum's Brise Soleil. Unprecedented in American architecture, the Burke Brise Soleil is a moveable, wing-like sunscreen that rests on top of the Museum’s vaulted, glass-enclosed Windhover Hall. Guest may choose to tour Art Museum or tour the Mitchell Park Horticultural Domes where you can experience a desert oasis, a tropical jungle and special floral gardens. Enjoy lunch traveling through the Milwaukee River into Lake Michigan aboard the Edelweiss where you are able to view Milwaukee icons such as the Milwaukee Art Museum, Pier Wisconsin, Port of Milwaukee Lighthouses as well as many historic buildings throughout the downtown area. Depart for Indianapolis. (B, L)
