Day 1: Indianapolis - Charleston, SC Upon our arrival at the Charleston airport, meet the tour manager & transfer to our hotel for 3 nights – the Holiday Inn Historic District. Day 2: Charleston Sightseeing Built on a peninsula, Charleston has remained a beautiful port city for over 300 years. Preservation & Southern gentility are both a way of life here. Our city tour includes the Historic District, the Citadel, Battery Park, and a tour of the Calhoun Mansion. The afternoon is free to explore. Tonight, enjoy our Get Acquainted Dinner. (BD) Day 3: Charleston Gardens & Plantations Today we visit two Ashley River plantations. Magnolia Gardens has 50 acres filled with camellias & azaleas. Ride the Nature Train through the wildlife & cypress swamp. Next, visit Middleton Place, home to America’s oldest landscaped garden. Begun in 1741, it took 10 years to complete the terraces, lakes & camellia alleys. Tour the home and the stable yard with its craft displays. Return to our hotel for a free evening. (B) Day 4: Charleston, SC - Savannah, GA Depart for the historic port city of Beaufort. This quaint 1711 town with its narrow tree lined streets and historic homes will remind us of “Gone with the Wind”. Next, arrive in Savannah, one of the South’s most graceful cities. Stay two nights at the Hilton Garden Inn Historic District. Tonight, enjoy southern cuisine at Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room, a Savannah tradition for over 60 years. (BD) Day 5: Savannah Sightseeing The Cotton Trade made this city a vital shipping port during the 1800’s & today her unique past has been preserved. You’ll begin today with a morning city tour where you’ll see the 20 original squares, all landscaped with oak, azaleas, fountains, & statues. Drive by the Old Cotton Exchange, River Street, & Madison Square where General Sherman ended his “March to the Sea”. You’ll also tour a restored antebellum mansion prior to enjoying a free afternoon to see the sights of John Berendt’s “Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil” and stroll the cobblestone streets at your leisure. Tonight, a special treat, an included dinner at famous chef Paula Deen’s restaurant “Lady & Sons”. (BD) Day 6: Savannah - St. Simon's Island - Jekyll Island Motor south today to the Golden Isles of Georgia. Travel through Brunswick and stop on St. Simon’s Island to view famous Christ Church. This afternoon, arrive on ten mile long Jekyll Island, once a hunting reserve for America’s wealthiest millionaires. Goodyear, Pulitzer, & Rockefeller built elaborate “cottages” here. Tour the Historic District’s Rockefeller Indian Mound & Faith Chapel (houses may be substituted). Stay at the 1886 Victorian–style Jekyll Island Club, originally an exclusive retreat for the rich. Dinner is choice–of–menu in the elegant Grand Dining Room. (BD) Day 7: Jekyll Island - St. Augustine - Jacksonville, FL Travel to St. Augustine, America’s oldest city, founded in 1565. Enjoy a horse drawn carriage ride through this early Spanish city, made famous by Ponce De Leon’s search for the Fountain of Youth. Visit the city’s Oldest House (1702) & the Otto Lightner Museum with its exquisite Tiffany windows, crystal, & music boxes. Travel on to Jacksonville and stay at the Hyatt Regency. This evening reminisce over our journey at our Farewell Dinner. (BD) Day 8: Jacksonville, FL - Indianapolis, IN Tour the interesting Anheuser–Busch Brewery prior to arriving at the airport for our return flights home.
